CHAPTER THIRTY-EIGHT
âWhere was it, again?â
Gail was following a uniformed officer to a spot where he said heâd seen tyre marks, to the east of the site.
He pointed. âOver there.â
She squinted. They were separated from the track he was indicating by a thicket of hedges and a fair amount of mud.
âAnd thereâs prints in the mud, right there.â He indicated the ground beneath the hedges.
âGood work, PCâ¦?â
âPC Laurence, Maâam.â
âYou donât have to call me that, Iâm a civilian.â
He shrugged and walked away.
She eyed the prints in the mud, and the track beyond. She could just about make out the tyre tracks.
It might be nothing. It might be a farm vehicle.
âPC Laurence?â she called back.
He turned back to her. âYes?â
âThat track. You donât happen to know where it leads, do you?â
âI think it loops back round to the road. It doesnât go anywhere, really.â
Perfect.
âThanks. But how do we access it? Does it go past the entrance?â
A shrug. âI guess it comes out of the car park, but Iâm not sure.â
âGreat. Thanks again.â
Gail took some photos, then texted Gav and headed back to the pool. Gav was on the other side of the site, helping the police finish their search there. Gail strode to the tea room and the exit, hoping Gav would catch her up.
He was already waiting for her in the car park. âWhatâs up? I was grabbing my lunch.â
She smiled. âYou and your packed lunches.â She checked her watch. âBlimey, half one already. Where did the morning go?â
He shrugged. âWhat have you found?â
âThereâs a track running around the eastern side of the site. Uniform found tyre tracks, and boot prints leading to it.â
âThey did?â
âIt could be the way the killer brought the body in.â
âIt could indeed.â Gavin turned away from her. âLetâs take a look.â
âHold on a minute.â Gail pulled out her phone. âWe donât know where weâre going yet.â
âAh. Well, I assumedââ
âLetâs not assume. Letâs pretend we know what weâre doing, and use a map.â
âSorry.â
She gave him a glancing punch on the arm. âIâm toying with you.â She examined the Ordnance Survey maps app on her phone. âThereâs a line here, an unfinished track. Thatâll be it.â
âLead the way.â
âI shall.â Gail strode away from the cars, making for a gap in the hedge.
âWatch the ground for tyre marks,â she said as she walked.
âIâm recording this. But the groundâs dry. I canât see anything. You sure Uniform found tracks?â
âThereâs some boggy ground round there, apparently it forms a lake at the top when itâs wet enough.â
âAnd thatâs enough for prints and tracks to be left.â
âExactly. Presumably whoever left them didnât realise.â
She continued walking. The track turned to the right, following the edge of the site. A fence ran between them and the woods, and on their left were open fields.
âItâs quite an anomaly, this place,â Gav said.
Gail continued scanning the ground as she walked. âHow so?â
âThis areaâs all gorse and deciduous trees. Here itâs conifers. I wonder why.â
âPerhaps the owners have cultivated it, over the years.â
âIt feels older than that.â
âCould have had any number of owners.
